Sacramento Cooperative Community Fund (SCCF)
Background
“Give where you live” is the purpose of a nation-wide effort of food co-ops to build local “cooperative community funds”—endowment funds from which the interest earnings are donated back to local organizations. This effort reflects of the Seventh Cooperative Principle - Concern for Community - which states that cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their members. Many food co-ops across the U.S. have started such funds, and here in Sacramento, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, in conjunction with the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation (based in Davis and coordinating the nationwide effort), established the SCCF in 2001.
Grants
The SCCF now has an annual spring process for making “micro-grants” (typically $200-$750) to local not-for-profit and cooperative organizations for eligible projects which fit at least one of the categories in the SNFC Community Sharing Policy (i.e., promoting nutrition or health, supporting a healthy environment, meeting basic human needs—particularly nutrition, or promoting the cooperative movement).
From 2005 through 2007, we’ve awarded over $5,000 for projects in the Sacramento region (see list of SCCF Awards below). If you are interested in applying for a 2008 micro-grant, please review the eligibility criteria and follow the instructions in the 2008 Request for Proposals (RFP, below). Applications are due (by mail or email only) March 31, 2008, and we anticipate announcing awards in mid-May.

Contributions
You can help grow the SCCF with your tax-deductible donation. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to bring the fund “corpus” (balance) to $50,000 and provide a steadier stream of interest for annual grants. You can contribute to the SCCF at the Co-op's checkout stands when you shop, or you can donate directly by sending a check to the Sacramento Co-op Community Fund/TPCF, c/o Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation, 216 F Street, #1844, Davis, CA 95616.
More Information
If you have further questions about applying for grants, donating to the fund, or participating on the SCCF Committee, please leave a message for the SCCF Committee at (916) 868-6348 and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
Donation Requests
The Co-op, along with so many of our staff and Co-op owners, supports the good work of numerous charitable organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, the Co-op makes donations (food and/or non-food product, event sponsorship, advertising, etc.) to help these groups with their worthy endeavors.
In order for us to consider a donation request, the recipient organization must fall within certain guidelines. For specific guidelines, see our Community Sharing policy. (To view this policy, download the document in PDF format with Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you may download a free copy from Adobe.)
To request a donation from the Co-op, please download the following form, fill it out and either mail or fax it to the Co-op. (Download the document in PDF format with Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you may download a free copy from Adobe.)
