Thursday, 06 September 2012 09:30

Organic Pastures Dairy is requesting the return of Grade A Raw Whole Milk, Skim Milk, and Raw Cream, with code date of September 13, 2012. Carrageenan (a seaweed derivative) Classified as a Possible Human Carcinogen PDF Print E-mail

Carrageenan is a seaweed derivative that is used as a stabilizer and thickener in foods, including some organic foods.

Carrageenan has been found to be contaminated with a substance (degraded carrageenan) that is classified by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer as a “possible human carcinogen.” Research funded by the National Institutes of Health raises serious concerns about harmful effects of carrageenan as an inflammatory agent on the human gastrointestinal tract.

The Co-op offers lots of carrageenan-free alternatives. The Cornucopia Institute has created this shopping guide (link to: http://www.cornucopia.org/shopping-guide-to-avoiding-organic-foods-with-carrageenan/)
